OpenAI says it has passed one billion active users.

Two million businesses, too. Announced July 31 local time.

ChatGPT launched November 30, 2022, so that is three years and eight months.

The venue was more telling than the number

The figure did not arrive in a product announcement.

It sat inside a post titled "Building abundant intelligence," written by Sarah Friar, the chief financial officer. Most of the post is about price.

And it landed the day after OpenAI cut GPT-5.6 prices.

The same cut I wrote about yesterday.

Which means a number I could not print yesterday is now public. The post lists actual rates.

  • 1. Luna — $0.20 per million input tokens, $1.20 per million output
  • 2. Terra — $2 input, $12 output
  • 3. Sol's Fast mode — up to 2.5x standard speed at twice the price, intelligence unchanged

Yesterday's announcement gave only the percentages, 80 and 20, with no per-token rates. This one fills them in.

The last stretch to a billion took five months

Yonhap's timeline splits the growth into two very different phases.

One million signups in five days. 100 million weekly active users within a year. 200 million by August 2024, 500 million by August 2025, 800 million by October 2025.

That part is a straight line up.

But OpenAI's internal target was a billion by the end of last year, per Yonhap. It hit 900 million only in February, and needed five more months to clear a billion.

Yonhap attributes the plateau to Google and Anthropic, noting Anthropic's Claude Mythos and Fable models briefly pushed its valuation past OpenAI's.

One billion counts active users, not cumulative signups. But OpenAI did not say whether that means weekly or monthly.

This is worth flagging. Earlier milestones of 100 and 200 million were reported as weekly active users, but OpenAI's wording this time is simply "active users." With no period stated, I cannot confirm it is the same yardstick.

The model did not change. The score tripled.

One more passage from the same post.

On the public ARC-AGI-3 task set, GPT-5.6 Sol's score rose from 13.3% to 38.3% while using six times fewer output tokens.

OpenAI's own line: "The model did not change. The surrounding system did."

Reads to me like there is headroom left without training anything new.

Read it without the IPO and you get half the story

Why the CFO announced user numbers becomes easier to guess in context.

Per Yonhap, OpenAI filed a confidential IPO application early last month, targeting a listing this year. It is now said to be weighing a delay to next year, after expectations that its post-listing valuation would fall short of one trillion dollars.

That last part is reported secondhand, not confirmed. I am passing it along as such.

A billion users, two million businesses, lower prices, serving costs down 20 percent — the numbers an investor would want, gathered into one post. That reading is mine.

So what does this mean for you?

Price, first. With real per-token rates public, you can gauge how much the model behind a given service actually costs to run.

One more thing. OpenAI says that six months after signing up, people send roughly 50 percent more messages a day and use ChatGPT for about twice as many kinds of work.

You start out using it instead of a search box, and at some point it is stitched into your job. That was true for me.

The billion is the headline, but the five stalled months are what stays with me..
