A reporter asked Gemini what it knew about him.
Gemini said he was likely to sell his car soon.
He had, in fact, been discussing exactly that with his wife..
Edaily reported on July 25 about a New York Times reporter's experiment: he fed four prompts to Gemini and ChatGPT.
The point is this. These chatbots infer things you never told them, based on your conversations.
According to the report, they pick up on things like:
- Age, income level, where you live
- Personal circumstances and health status
- Personality, spending habits, decision-making style
What did the AI get right?
Gemini judged that the reporter was likely to get rid of his car soon — the conversation he was actually having.
ChatGPT went elsewhere. From his habit of checking details closely when painting or repairing the house, it concluded he had perfectionist tendencies.
It even added a blind spot: when plans go off track, he might push himself too hard.
Health came up too. Based on his repeated questions about drug allergies, the AI itself warned that health information could work against him if used in insurance, hiring, or advertising.
To me, the unsettling part isn't that it guessed right. It's that he never said any of it.
Can I see what's stored? — ChatGPT
You can. Per OpenAI's help center, the path is:
- ① Profile picture → Settings → Personalization
- ② Check what ChatGPT remembers in the memory summary
- ③ Delete individually, clear all, or turn it off entirely
Memory splits in two: <saved memories> you explicitly asked it to keep, and <reference chat history>, insights it gathered from past chats on its own.
Turn off chat history reference and what it remembered gets deleted, and removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, the company says.
What about Gemini?
Per Google's help center: Settings → Personal context → 'Your past chats with Gemini.'
Older conversations can be found and deleted in your Gemini Apps Activity.
If you'd rather leave nothing behind, use Temporary Chats. Google says they don't appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity, and aren't used to personalize your experience or train its models.
It only works with a personal Google account, though — not work, school, or supervised accounts.
There's one trap here
Deleting a conversation does not delete the memory of it.
Per OpenAI, deleting a chat leaves the saved memories from that chat intact. And turning saved memories off doesn't automatically erase what's already stored.
That's where people think they've cleaned up but haven't. Chats and memories have to be cleared separately.
The better the AI knows you, the better its answers. What you hand over for that convenience stays invisible until you go look.
Turning it all off isn't the answer
I don't think switching everything off is the answer. Wipe the memory and you'll be explaining yourself from scratch every time.
But it's worth opening once. See what it knows, then delete only what you'd rather not leave behind.
If you've been asking a lot about health or money, start there. That's exactly where the AI itself raised a flag in the experiment.
Opening settings and skimming the list takes five minutes. Worth doing today..
