YouTube has decided to stop paying ad money to "AI copy-paste" videos.
It's about the channels that were pumping out dozens of clips with a few clicks.
But reading through the coverage, one thing felt off.
Korean outlets ran the story on the 26th, yet the policy had been live since July 16.
Something that started ten days earlier only reached the news here much later..
What YouTube revised is its "inauthentic content" policy. TechCrunch reported that Matt Halprin, YouTube's trust and safety chief, announced it in a Creator Insider video.
It isn't a brand new rule either. Back in 2025 YouTube had already renamed "repetitious content" to "mass-produced content", and this update spells out the criteria, according to Hankyung.
Three kinds of video lose the ad money.
- ① Mechanical mass duplication — churning out videos with almost no real difference, using AI, CGI or templates
- ② Off-putting shock content — staged animal rescue clips and the like, made only for views
- ③ AI avatars modeled on real people giving financial, medical or legal advice
None of this deletes the videos. It just cuts the money off.
The third one bites harder, though. Hankyung reported that those channels are removed from the YouTube Partner Program entirely.
Here's the part that's easy to get wrong.
Using AI doesn't get you flagged on its own. YouTube's position is that it doesn't care which tool you used.
Halprin said AI can be a tool that helps creators, but that channels pouring out automated output with human planning and creativity stripped out will face strict standards.
I read it as: add your own commentary, edit it yourself, structure it yourself, and you're fine.
The problem isn't that AI made it. It's that no human was in it.
If you run a channel, the line just got clearer. It isn't AI or no AI — it's whether you were in it.
There's something in it for people who only watch, too.
An AI avatar wearing a doctor's face talking about your health, an expert-looking AI pitching an investment..
The fact that YouTube singled this out also tells you how much of it was out there.
I think the direction is right.
That said, how YouTube will actually tell "mechanical duplication" apart from "human planning" — the enforcement method wasn't disclosed in this announcement.
Where exactly that line lands is the real question..
