- 오픈AI — GPT-5.6과 'ChatGPT Work'
I wrote 19 pieces on this site during July.
Each felt like a separate event while writing. Laid out across the month, four currents show up.
Here they are in order. The detail on each event sits in its own article.
① The price collapsed
July's biggest story wasn't a new model. It was pricing.
On July 16 China's Moonshot AI released Kimi K3. It landed near the top of the intelligence index at a far lower price. One analysis put the same-day drop in Anthropic and OpenAI's estimated valuations at $314 billion, about 464 trillion won.
Eight days later, on July 24, Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5 at exactly half the price of its own top model, Fable 5 — $5 to $25 per million tokens against $10 to $50.
Higher score, half the cost. They undercut themselves.
As of July 28 the index leader is Opus 5 at 61. Within a month, first place changed hands and the price halved.
② AI moved into the office
On July 12 three companies announced the same thing within a day.
- Anthropic — Claude Cowork extended to phone and web, and to government
- OpenAI — GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work
- Google — computer use in Gemini 3.5 Flash, driving the screen directly
Two days later Samsung picked Google's Gemini Enterprise for work — not on ranking, but because it plugs into Gmail and Docs.
On the 17th Anthropic gave verified US K-12 teachers full premium Claude access.
Companies, government and schools, all in one month. A market where organisations pay per team is simply bigger than one where individuals pay $20.
③ China shook the board
As of July 19, the top five open-weight models by usage were all Chinese.
Not because they scored highest. They were free and cheap, so people started using them.
The people behind Kimi K3 are in their 30s and 40s — that's the age range of Moonshot AI's founders.
Then on July 26 around 20 US tech companies sent an open letter to their own government, arguing against regulating Chinese open models out of reach. Nvidia, Microsoft and Meta signed; OpenAI, Anthropic and Google did not.
The point of that story is that the split — block it or open it — runs inside the US.
④ The rules arrived late
As the technology ran ahead, the rules started catching up.
On July 14, some 200 people including 16 Nobel laureates in economics signed a joint statement: AI brings change larger than the Industrial Revolution, so prepare now. Executives from the companies building it signed too.
On July 16 YouTube cut ad revenue for "AI slop" video. The target isn't AI use itself but mass output with no human planning in it.
On July 25 came reporting that chatbot guardrails can be worked around. At the same time, blocking the word "pathogen" in Claude left US CDC staff unable to do their jobs.
Loosen it and it gets bypassed; tighten it and ordinary people get blocked. Where to draw that line looks like this year's running problem.
Where Korea stands
There was no shortage of Korea news either.
Korea's AI usage rate reached 37.1%, up 6.4 percentage points from 30.7% in the second half of last year, moving the country from 18th to 16th globally. People are handing AI not just work but career and relationship questions.
The government said it would build a free national AI with Kakao and LG Uplus, and in December ship a public AI that tells you which benefits you qualify for before you ask.
The Korea-US AI chip agreement produced a figure of 1,375 trillion won, alongside partnerships pairing SKT and Samsung SDS with Anthropic, and Naver with Nvidia.
Naver said it would pay bloggers up to 10 million won a month for writing that AI search actually picks up.
Money is arriving and usage is climbing, but no Korean model is near the top of the index yet. That's Korea in July.
The month in one line
The price halved, AI moved into the office, China threw the doors open, and the rules came limping after.
July shifted the contest from "who is smarter" to "who is cheaper, and closer to where you already are".
There isn't much an individual needs to do right now.
One thing is worth doing, though: look again at what your current AI does on its free tier. If prices halved in a month, more of what sits behind a paywall has room to come down.
August will turn it over again. July did..
