On July 12, 2026, three companies shipped the same idea within a day of each other.
Anthropic, OpenAI and Google all announced an AI that does the work.
Taken one at a time they read as routine updates. Stacked together, they point one way.
What each of them shipped that day
Anthropic extended Claude Cowork to phone and web. It had been desktop-first; now it fits in a hand. The same announcement said Claude Code and Cowork were coming to government and public agencies.
Cowork is what the name says — an AI coworker. Less a chat window, more something working alongside you on actual tasks.
OpenAI paired a new model, GPT-5.6, with ChatGPT Work. It pulls content from the tools a team already uses and turns scattered notes and drafts into finished output. Desktop first, then the other plans.
A voice model, GPT-Live, arrived the same day. The unusual part is that it listens and speaks at once — it interjects while you're still talking.
Google put computer use into Gemini 3.5 Flash. The AI looks at the screen and clicks and types directly, doing what you'd do with a mouse.
Alongside it came Gemini Omni, which handles text, images, audio and video in one model, plus Live Translate.
Boiled down to a line each, the three split like this.
- Anthropic — an AI coworker beside you (phone, web, and government too)
- OpenAI — an AI that turns scattered material into finished output (plus a voice that interjects)
- Google — an AI that clicks and types on the screen (plus text, image, audio and video in one)
Same destination, different doors. Anthropic went with "coworker", OpenAI with "output", Google with "control".
Why all in the same week
Coincidence is a stretch, because all three aim at the same place.
Cowork, ChatGPT Work, computer use — every one of them points at the office. Two of them have Work in the name.
Until then the contest was about who gives the smarter answer. Once that settled somewhat, the question seems to have moved to what the thing can actually take off your hands.
The other reason is size: a market where companies pay per team is far bigger than one where individuals pay $20 a month.
And it wasn't only these three. Around the same time xAI shipped a coding-focused Grok.
OpenAI also said GPT-5.6 would be built into Microsoft Office — Word, Excel, PowerPoint. "Aiming at the office" isn't a metaphor.
You don't switch programs. The AI is already inside the one you use.
Two weeks on, it actually followed through
I checked whether it stopped at the announcements. It didn't.
On July 14 Samsung picked Google's Gemini Enterprise as its work AI — not for ranking, but because it plugs straight into Gmail and Docs. That's the office-first strategy landing for the first time.
On July 24 Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 at half the price of its own top model. Higher score, half the cost. Getting teams to use it at volume means bringing the unit price down.
Enterprise share sits at Anthropic 40%, OpenAI 27%, Google 21%. Google is third and still took Samsung, which says this isn't settled.
What changes for you
An AI that answers and an AI that does the work are used differently.
The first needs you to know what to ask. The second needs you to define what to hand over.
That's especially true for anything that drives the screen. The convenience comes with a question you have to answer yourself: how far does this go?
You're no longer choosing what to ask. You're choosing what to hand over.
Nothing here demands an immediate change.
But writing down which parts of your work are rule-bound and repetitive means you'll be ready the day these features show up on your screen.
All three have a free tier, so that's the place to try it first..
