Two AI companies just lost about 464 trillion won in estimated value.
This isn't about stock prices. Neither company is even public yet. We're talking about OpenAI and Anthropic.
All because of one Chinese model..
Chinese startup Moonshot AI released a new model called Kimi K3. It has 2.8 trillion parameters and handles up to 1 million tokens of context at once.
On Artificial Analysis' intelligence index it ranked third, behind Anthropic's Fable 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol.
Third place is surprising enough. But the real story is the price.
According to Digital Today, the average cost per task came to $0.95. Claude Fable 5 costs $2.75, GPT-5.6 Sol $1.06.
So: third-best performance at roughly a third of the top model's cost.
Where does the 464 trillion won figure come from?
It's an estimate from IG's pre-IPO market, as of July 19 local time.
- Anthropic — down 7.31%, $232 billion (about 343 trillion won) wiped out
- OpenAI — down 5.62%, $82 billion (about 121 trillion won) wiped out
- Together: $314 billion, roughly 464 trillion won
That's measured against the July 16 close. Keep in mind this is an over-the-counter valuation estimate, not money that actually changed hands.
There's a counterargument. Morningstar analyst Malik Ahmed Khan called the drop in US big tech shares an overreaction.
How is the US responding?
David Sacks, the Trump administration's AI czar, said it was "concerning."
Dean Ball, head of strategic futures at OpenAI, called it "a very good model" and said simple distillation of someone else's model doesn't explain it.
Ryan Fedasiuk of the American Enterprise Institute said the US-China gap has narrowed to a matter of weeks.
Axios reported that the Trump administration is weighing measures that would effectively restrict US companies from using Chinese AI models. It's still under review.
Demand has already piled up. Moonshot AI temporarily suspended new paid subscriptions because its compute couldn't keep up.
To me it reads like the axis of competition is shifting — from "who is smartest" to "what does good enough cost."
Why 464 trillion won isn't someone else's problem
It's the price.
If third-place performance costs a third as much, the AI behind the apps you use quietly changes. That leaves room for prices to come down.
Then again, if the US restricts Chinese models, that room shrinks again. It's still under review, so we'll see.
Maeil Business Newspaper called DeepSeek "just the trailer" for this. With DeepSeek the story was about price. This time price and performance arrived together..
I have a feeling I'll be recalculating my AI bills later this year.
