Google DeepMind has published its WeatherNext cyclone-forecasting research in Nature — and says it is open sourcing the model.

The number that matters is one day.

A three-day forecast now matches yesterday's two-day one

DeepMind says the model gives forecasters an extra day's worth of predictive accuracy on average: its three-day forecasts are as good as what prior models could provide for only the next two days.

Cyclones are a disaster where every hour counts. By the figures DeepMind cites, tropical cyclones caused more than 700,000 deaths and $1.4 trillion in economic losses worldwide over the past 50 years.

Measured against the trend of the last 20 years, DeepMind says this improvement is equivalent to a decade of progress.

It is not just the track. The model reached state-of-the-art accuracy on track, intensity and wind structure alike, and when evaluated on real cyclones from 2023 to 2024 it gained more than a full day of lead time on all three.

Track and intensity used to need different models

This is the technically interesting part.

Where a cyclone goes is steered by massive global atmospheric currents, which coarse global models handled best. How strong it gets is driven by highly localized, fine-scale thermodynamic processes around its core — the job of specialized, higher-resolution local models.

So it was a choice between the two. WeatherNext folds both into one model.

How it does that runs against intuition. Very high spatial resolution was considered the main driver of accurate intensity forecasts, yet WeatherNext Cyclones only needs data at 28x28km — 100x coarser than traditional models.

Instead it was co-trained on two modalities: global weather dynamics, and expert-curated historical cyclone observations. Training ran end to end on nearly 20 terabytes of global atmospheric data and the IBTrACS database of nearly 5,000 historical storms.

Speed came up too. A single 15-day forecast takes under a minute on a TPU. Running a 1,000-member ensemble produces localised probability maps of tropical storm to hurricane-force winds.

It was already used on Hurricane Melissa

This is not only a paper. During the 2025 hurricane season the model helped the US National Hurricane Center, DeepMind says.

It predicted Hurricane Melissa's rapid intensification and landfall in Jamaica, letting the NHC issue an advance warning that gave teams on the ground critical time to prepare.

The work brought together researchers at Google DeepMind and Google Research with expert forecasters at the NHC, the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, the UK Met Office and weather agencies around the world.

The code and the weights are going out

Alongside the Nature paper, DeepMind is releasing the code and model weights freely for anyone to build on.

Three releases.

  • WeatherNext Cyclones — the model that actually ran during the hurricane season; the paper's results are from this one
  • WeatherNext 2 — a later update, operationalized in October
  • WeatherNext 2-mini — a compact version at a coarser 111x111km resolution that runs on a single TPU

The stated intent covers academic research, operational forecasting, and building more specialized, localized models.

To just look at forecasts, there is Weather Lab, recently refreshed with a new interface and expanded beyond cyclone tracks to global weather — temperature, precipitation, wind speed and more in a single view.
