Jeff Dean is leaving Google.

He joined in 1999 and led search infrastructure and the AI research organization. He is widely credited with building the foundation of Google's AI today.

He is not going alone. Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals — core DeepMind researchers — are starting a company with him called Discovery Loop.

One detail stands out.

Google is investing directly in that startup and has signed an agreement to supply its cloud computing resources.

It is funding and hosting the company its own people are leaving to build. That reads less like a breakup than a spinout. That reading is mine.

A reorganization was announced the same day.

Demis Hassabis, who led DeepMind, becomes chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. He will focus on research direction and long-term strategy while Koray Kavukcuoglu, a longtime deputy, takes over operations.

Hassabis wrote on his blog that it was time to hand off day-to-day operations and concentrate on the broader direction and future of AI.

He led AlphaGo and AlphaFold and shared last year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold. He remains CEO of the drug discovery company Isomorphic Labs.

Alphabet shares fell 4% on August 5 local time after the news.

This is not the first departure.

Earlier this year John Jumper, another Nobel laureate in chemistry, moved to Anthropic, and the prominent researcher Noam Shazeer went to OpenAI.

Bloomberg quoted a Google employee calling this wave of departures an earthquake for the organization.

What the market seems to worry about is speed rather than talent as such.

Google has poured tens of billions into AI infrastructure and people, but has been criticized for converting research into commercial services more slowly than rivals. The next-generation Gemini model, due in June, has slipped by months.

Bloomberg Intelligence argued that falling behind in frontier models could push developers away from Google's ecosystem and, over time, affect the search business.

So what does this mean for you?

If you use Gemini, it is worth allowing for the next version to arrive late. The June release has already slipped by months.

One more thing. People are moving between AI companies faster than products ship. Rather than betting on a company, it looks safer to keep your own tooling replaceable.

Someone leaves after 27 years and the company stays on as an investor. That is how partings work in AI right now..
