쓰던 AI를 바꾸면 가장 아쉬운 게 쌓아 둔 맥락입니다. 내가 어떤 말투를 좋아하는지, 무슨 일을 하는지 처음부터 다시 알려 줘야 하니까요.
지난 글에서 AI 메모리를 끄고 지우는 법을 다뤘다면, 이번에는 반대 방향입니다. 메모리를 꺼내서 다른 서비스로 옮기는 법입니다.
클로드에는 다른 AI의 메모리를 들여오는 기능이 있습니다. 무료부터 되지만, 옮긴다고 다 남는 건 아닙니다. 앤트로픽이 직접 적어 둔 빈틈이 있습니다.
■ 1단계 — 쓰던 AI에서 꺼낸다
먼저 지금 쓰는 서비스에서 메모리를 꺼내야 합니다. 앤트로픽은 이때 쓸 요청 문장을 따로 만들어 두고, 한 대화에서 맥락을 전부 뽑아내도록 썼다고 설명합니다.
내용을 옮기면 이렇습니다. 다른 서비스로 옮기려 하니 저장한 메모리와 지난 대화에서 알게 된 맥락을 전부 적어 달라, 복사하기 쉽게 코드 블록 하나에 담고 항목마다 저장 날짜와 내용을 붙여 달라, 가능하면 내가 쓴 말을 그대로 살려 달라는 것입니다.
빠뜨리지 말라고 짚은 항목이 여섯입니다. 말투·형식·문체처럼 답하는 방식에 관한 지시, 이름·지역·직업·가족·관심사 같은 개인 정보, 프로젝트와 목표와 자주 다룬 주제, 쓰는 도구와 언어, 내가 고쳐 준 선호, 그 밖의 저장된 맥락입니다. 요약하거나 묶거나 빼지 말고, 끝에 이게 전부인지 확인해 달라는 문장으로 끝납니다.
옮기기 전에 걸러낼 수도 있습니다. 앤트로픽은 이 요청 문장을 고쳐서 민감한 정보를 빼도 된다고 적었습니다. 쓰던 서비스가 파일을 만들 수 있다면 마크다운 파일로 받아 사본을 보관하는 방법도 권합니다.
■ 2단계 — 클로드에 붙여 넣는다
들여오는 자리는 설정입니다. 설정의 '메모리'에서 '가져오기 시작'을 누르면 앞의 요청 문장과 붙여 넣을 칸이 함께 나옵니다. 옛 메모리 화면을 쓰는 계정은 설정의 '기능' 안 메모리 항목에 같은 버튼이 있고, 홈 화면의 '클로드로 메모리 가져오기' 카드에서도 시작할 수 있습니다.
꺼낸 내용을 붙여 넣고 '메모리에 추가'를 누르면, 클로드가 핵심을 뽑아 항목별로 저장합니다. 끝나면 '클로드가 알게 된 것 보기'를 눌러 무엇을 배웠는지 물어볼 수 있습니다.
메모리 가져오기는 무료·프로·맥스·팀 요금제에서 웹과 클로드 데스크톱으로 됩니다.
■ 옮겨도 안 남는 것
그럼 붙여 넣은 내용이 전부 남을까요?
앤트로픽은 아니라고 적었습니다. 클로드의 메모리는 협업자로서 쓸모를 높이도록 업무 관련 주제에 맞춰 설계돼 있어, 업무와 무관한 개인 정보는 남기지 않을 수 있다는 것입니다. 꼭 남기고 싶은 내용은 설정에서 직접 추가하라고 안내합니다.
기능 자체도 아직 실험 단계입니다. 앤트로픽은 메모리 가져오기가 실험적이고 개발 중이라 들여온 내용을 항상 제대로 반영하지는 못할 수 있다고 밝혔습니다. 옛 메모리 화면에서는 반영까지 최대 24시간이 걸린다고 적혀 있습니다.
그래서 옮긴 뒤에는 확인이 필요합니다. 붙여 넣기 전 원본을 파일로 남겨 두고, 옮긴 뒤 무엇을 배웠는지 물어 빠진 것을 대조하는 순서가 안전합니다. 원본 파일과 가져온 결과의 대조.
■ 클로드에서 꺼낼 때
반대로 클로드의 메모리를 백업하거나 다른 곳으로 옮기고 싶다면 어떻게 할까요?
두 가지 길이 있습니다. 설정의 '기능'에서 '메모리 보기 및 편집'을 누르면 클로드가 보는 그대로 볼 수 있습니다. 아니면 대화창에서 "내 메모리를 저장된 그대로 한 글자도 바꾸지 말고 적어 줘"라고 요청하면 됩니다. 나온 내용을 내 컴퓨터 파일에 붙여 넣어 두면 백업이 되고, 다른 AI 서비스로 옮길 때도 씁니다.
날짜 하나는 이미 지났습니다. 옛 메모리에서 새 메모리로 넘어가는 과정에서 빠진 게 있을까 봐, 앤트로픽은 옛 메모리를 내보내는 옵션을 2026년 9월 9일까지 보여 준다고 안내했습니다.
메모리를 아예 안 남기고 쓰고 싶을 때는 시크릿 채팅이 따로 있습니다. 대화 기록과 메모리에 저장되지 않고 학습에도 쓰이지 않지만, 기본 30일간은 보관됩니다.
■ 옮기기 전에 볼 것
정리하면 이렇습니다.
- 요청 문장을 그대로 쓰되 민감한 정보는 먼저 지웁니다 — 앤트로픽이 고쳐 써도 된다고 적었습니다
- 원본을 파일로 남깁니다 — 가져오기는 아직 실험 단계라 다 반영된다는 보장이 없습니다
- 업무와 무관한 개인 정보는 빠질 수 있습니다 — 꼭 필요한 건 설정에서 직접 추가합니다
- 옮긴 뒤 '무엇을 배웠는지' 물어 대조합니다
- 클로드에서 꺼낼 때는 '저장된 그대로 적어 달라'고 합니다 — 요약하면 빠집니다
기기와 서비스를 넘나드는 메모리는 다른 회사들도 향하는 방향입니다. 구글은 9월 23일, 여러 기기에서 이어지는 메모리를 암호화된 클라우드 환경에 두는 설계를 앞으로 도입하겠다고 밝혔습니다. 아직은 계획 발표 단계입니다. 당장 옮길 수 있는 길은 지금 서비스에서 꺼내 붙여 넣는 방법이고, 그 과정에서 무엇이 빠지는지 아는 게 먼저입니다.
When you switch AI services, the accumulated context is what you miss most - having to explain again how you like answers written and what you do for a living.
Our last piece covered turning AI memory off and deleting it. This one runs the other way: taking memory out and moving it to another service.
Claude can import memory from other AI providers, starting on the free plan. But not everything you move survives, and Anthropic spells out where the gaps are.
■ Step 1 - export from the service you use now
First you pull the memory out of your current service. Anthropic provides a request prompt written to get all of your context out in a single chat.
In substance it says: I am moving to another service, so list every memory stored about me and everything learned from past conversations, in one code block that is easy to copy, each entry with its saved date and content, preserving my own words where possible.
It names six things not to miss: instructions on how to respond (tone, format, style), personal details such as name, location, job, family and interests, projects, goals and recurring topics, tools and languages used, corrections to the assistant's behavior, and any other stored context. It asks not to summarize, group or omit anything, and to confirm at the end whether the set is complete.
You can filter before moving. Anthropic says you may customize the prompt to exclude sensitive information, and if your current service can generate files, to export the memory as a Markdown file and keep a copy.
■ Step 2 - paste it into Claude
The import lives in settings. Under Settings > Memory, select "Start import" and you get the prompt above plus a box to paste into. Accounts on the legacy memory screen find the same button in the Memory section of Settings > Capabilities, and you can also start from the "Import memory to Claude" card on the home screen.
Paste the exported text and click "Add to memory": Claude extracts the key information and stores it as individual entries. Afterwards, "See what Claude learned about you" opens a chat asking what it picked up.
Memory import is available on Free, Pro, Max and Team plans, on the web and Claude Desktop.
■ What does not survive the move
So does everything you paste stay?
Anthropic says no. Claude's memory is designed around work-related topics to make it a better collaborator, so personal details unrelated to work may not be retained. Anything you want kept should be added directly in settings.
The feature itself is experimental. Anthropic says memory imports are still in active development and may not always incorporate imported memories successfully. On the legacy screen, it notes changes can take up to 24 hours to appear.
So check after moving: keep the original as a file before pasting, then ask what it learned and compare what went missing.
■ Taking memory out of Claude
What if you want to back up Claude's memory or move it elsewhere?
There are two routes. In Settings > Capabilities, "View and edit your memory" shows it exactly as Claude sees it. Or ask in a chat: "Write out your memories of me verbatim, exactly as they appear in your memory." Paste the result into a local file as a backup, or carry it to another AI service.
One date has already passed. For anything lost in the migration from legacy to new memory, Anthropic said the option to export legacy memory would be shown until September 9, 2026.
If you want no memory at all, there are incognito chats: not saved to history or memory and not used for training, though retained for 30 days by default.
■ Before you move
In short:
- Use the prompt as given, but strip sensitive details first - Anthropic says editing it is fine
- Keep the original as a file - import is experimental and not guaranteed to capture everything
- Personal details unrelated to work may drop out - add essentials directly in settings
- After moving, ask what it learned and compare
- When exporting from Claude, ask for memories verbatim - a summary loses entries
Memory that follows you across devices and services is where others are heading too. On September 23 Google said it will bring cross-device memory held in an encrypted cloud environment - still an announced plan. For now the way to move is export and paste, and knowing what falls out along the way comes first.
