A reporter with ten years on the job tried to automate his own repetitive work with an AI agent. He hit three walls, and submitted the skill unfinished.
But the walls are specific. For anyone attempting the same thing, that is more useful than a success story.
All three were failures of design, not of tooling.
What he set out to build
The setting is MABC 2026, an AI agent competition hosted by the Korean AI company Upstage with backing from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency. Entrants build agents on the 'Timely AI' platform to solve everyday and workplace problems.
His plan was a 'keyword news briefing every 15 minutes' skill, in four steps.
- 1. The user sets keywords
- 2. The skill searches news on those keywords every 15 minutes
- 3. Among articles covering the same event, it picks one representative story
- 4. It sends the selected headlines and links to Telegram
Why that? Because searching for articles is what a reporter repeats every day. A police beat reporter checks several assigned institutions all day long for anything breaking.
An analogy from the hands-on session helped, he wrote. The agent is a wizard, the skill is a spell, and the tools are the wizard's implements. A skill, in the end, is your own manual for handling repetitive work — an intellectual asset.
Wall one — the API integration
He kept getting stuck integrating the Naver API, and switched to Google News.
Google was easy to connect but behaved differently from what he wanted. Searching for the latest news sometimes surfaced higher-profile stories first. What a reporter needs is what just appeared; judging importance is the human's job.
Telegram was straightforward, because Timely itself offers a 'notification channel' feature that connects to Telegram, KakaoTalk and Slack.
The output had problems, though. Changing the search keyword did nothing — it kept searching the originally saved keyword — and multiple articles about the same event poured in. Picking one representative story was never implemented. For monitoring his beat, he wrote, its usefulness was 'zero'.
The fix was in the skill store
Nine days later, working with a teammate, he found the answer: a skill called `k-naver-news` in Timely's skill store.
It uses the Naver Search Open API to pull headlines, publication times, links and summaries for recent news — and crucially, it works without issuing your own API key. He applied it immediately and moved from Google News to Naver.
Someone had already built the fix he had spent days hunting for. Finding and combining what exists beats building from scratch.
Wall two — the first design follows you to the end
What came next did not go smoothly. Time and credits went into things that were not the point.
The problem was designing for '15-minute automatic execution' from the start. With runs set for the top of the hour and 15, 30 and 45 minutes past, live testing during development became awkward. Changing the structure midway meant untangling it from everything already built.
He reached for the idea of a 'kluge' — a clumsy but working solution stitched together from imperfect parts. Get the first design slightly wrong and fixing it costs far more effort than getting it right.
Design was a wall too. He wanted a control panel with a keyword field and a run button pinned to the bottom of the prompt window, but long explanations kept appearing after the results. Putting it in Timely's 'absolute rules' AI instruction field did not help.
Wall three — the agent that worked diligently all night
The next day, Telegram was full of news that had arrived overnight. For a moment it felt good: the agent had run with the laptop switched off.
So what went wrong? The credit balance was zero.
The 20,000 credits granted for the competition were gone. When he had stopped work the previous evening, about 13,000 remained. Because he never stopped the job, the agent spent the night searching every 15 minutes and pushing to Telegram. He asked the organisers for more credits and was told that would break the rules.
A single keyword burned more than 10,000 credits in half a day. Real use would need dozens of keywords.
Decide these before you copy it
He left three things to improve.
- Cutting token usage while keeping the polling interval you want
- Grouping articles about the same event and showing only one
- A simpler user interface
Add what this account demonstrates and an order emerges: attach automatic execution last, search the skill store before building, and decide the stop condition before switching it on.
What he counted as the real gain was not technical. The core of an agent, he concluded, is asking “what do I repeat every day?” and handing that over.
Nor does it need to be perfect at first. When you get stuck, ask the AI; when it fails, fix it; borrow someone else's skill; then fix it again.
One unfinished skill, 20,000 credits gone, and one question left over. That is the list worth knowing before you try it.
