DeepSeek, Kimi K3, GLM.

The Chinese models shaking up AI right now.

Then I looked at how old their founders are..

Hong Kong's Sing Tao Daily profiled four Chinese LLM founders on the 23rd. Herald Business reported on it on the 26th.

Sing Tao called them the four LLM founders, all of them straight-A students.

They take different technical and business routes, but share one thing: every one of them is in their thirties or forties.

Who are they?

  • Liang Wenfeng (41) — DeepSeek, whose open-source model rattled the world last year
  • Yang Zhilin (34) — Moonshot AI, maker of Kimi K3 with 2.8 trillion parameters
  • Tang Jie (49) — Zhipu, behind the GLM series
  • Yan Junjie (37) — MiniMax

The youngest, Yang Zhilin, is 34 — and he built the model Washington is most nervous about.

What are their backgrounds?

From what Sing Tao reported:

Yang Zhilin topped the science track in the college entrance exam in Shantou, Guangdong. He studied computer science at Tsinghua, earned a doctorate at Carnegie Mellon, and returned from the US to found his company in 2023.

Liang Wenfeng was also a regional exam topper. He studied electronic information at Zhejiang University, set up a quant hedge fund in 2015, and later built DeepSeek.

Tang Jie is the outlier. He earned a computer science doctorate at Tsinghua in 2006 and was teaching there when he founded Zhipu in 2019 — the only academic of the four.

Yan Junjie studied mathematics at Southeast University, took his master's and doctorate at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Automation, and did postdoctoral work at Tsinghua.

The credentials are striking, but something else caught my eye: all four are founders who understand the technology themselves.

How much are they worth?

These are estimates reported by Sing Tao — valuations, not confirmed figures.

  • Yang Zhilin — 51.83% of Moonshot AI, personal wealth put at about $16.3 billion
  • Liang Wenfeng — 84.29% of DeepSeek, with voting rights close to 100%
  • Yan Junjie — 21.6% of MiniMax

The stakes stand out. Liang holds 84%, Yang 51%. That is a different ownership structure from US AI companies built on heavy outside investment.

American AI is pushed by big capital and big tech; Chinese AI is driven by founders in their thirties and forties who still hold the shares.

These are the people moving the price of the AI you use.

Most of what they build is open-weight — downloadable, modifiable and cheap. Which is why even the top US models have started cutting prices.

To me the story isn't the individuals so much as the speed. All four started between 2015 and 2023. They got here inside a decade.

That goes some way to explaining why this field keeps turning over so fast..
