AI 사용량 순위를 보고 좀 놀랐다.

1위부터 5위까지 전부 중국 모델이다.

그런데 더 이상한 건, 성능 1위는 중국 모델이 아니라는 거다..

미국 인터넷매체 액시오스가 현지시간 18일 보도한 내용이다.

AI 모델 중개 플랫폼 오픈라우터의 주간 토큰 사용량 기준으로, 상위 5개가 모두 중국 회사 모델이었다.

성능이 제일 좋아서 1위인 걸까?

아니다. 여기가 핵심이다.

같은 날 중국 문샷이 새 모델 '키미 K3'를 내놨다. 파라미터 2조 8000억 개, 컨텍스트 100만 토큰이다.

AI 평가 업체 아티피셜 어낼리시스 점수를 보면 이렇다.

  • 키미 K3 — 57점 (4위)

키미 K3는 4위다. 1등이 아니다.

제미나이와 그록은 제쳤지만, 클로드와 GPT는 아직 위에 있다.

그럼 왜 다들 쓰는 걸까?

값이다.

키미 K3의 API 요금은 출력 토큰 100만 개당 100위안. 우리 돈으로 약 219원이다.

API 관리 회사 콩의 아우구스토 마리에티 CEO는 최상위 모델이 지나치게 비싸 최근 3개월간 오픈웨이트 모델 사용이 급증했다고 말했다.

모질라의 라피 크리코리안 CTO는 최상위 AI를 일상 업무에 쓰는 걸 "장보러 가면서 페라리를 모는 격"이라고 표현했다.

그러면서 일상 업무 비용을 최대 50분의 1까지 낮출 수 있다고 했다.

성능 3점 차이를 위해 몇십 배를 더 낼 이유가 있느냐 — 시장이 그렇게 답한 셈이다.

공짜 모델이 늘면 달라지는 것

AI 요금이 내려갈 가능성이 생겼다.

액시오스가 인용한 한 AI 투자자는 앞으로 개방형 모델이 기업 AI 업무 요청의 95%를 처리하고, 나머지 5%만 최상위 모델이 맡게 될 거라고 내다봤다.

모건스탠리는 이번 결과를 두고 중국 대형언어모델이 규모나 성능, 가격 면에서 미국 선도 기업들을 따라잡고 있음을 보여주는 것이라고 평가했다.

내 생각엔, 우리가 쓰는 서비스 뒷단이 조용히 바뀌는 쪽이 먼저일 것 같다. 챗봇을 붙인 회사 입장에선 값이 몇십 배 싼 선택지가 생긴 거니까.

물론 성능 1위 자리는 아직 안 넘어갔다. 거기까진 지켜봐야 한다..

The AI usage rankings surprised me.

Every one of the top five is a Chinese model.

Stranger still: the highest-scoring model is not Chinese.

Axios reported it on the 18th, local time.

By weekly token usage on OpenRouter, a platform that routes requests across AI models, the top five were all from Chinese companies.

  • 3. DeepSeek
  • 4. MiniMax
  • 5. Z.ai

All five are open-weight. You can download them, modify them, and they cost little.

Are they on top because they're the best?

No. That's the interesting part.

The same day, China's Moonshot released a new model, Kimi K3 — 2.8 trillion parameters, a 1 million token context window.

Here are the scores from the evaluation firm Artificial Analysis.

  • Claude Fable 5 — 60 (1st)
  • GPT-5.6 Sol Max — 59
  • GPT-5.6 Sol XHigh — 58
  • Kimi K3 — 57 (4th)
  • Grok 4.5 — 54
  • Gemini 3.5 Flash — 50

Kimi K3 sits fourth. Not first.

It passed Gemini and Grok, but Claude and GPT are still ahead.

So why is everyone using them?

Price.

Kimi K3's API costs 100 yuan per million output tokens — roughly 219 Korean won.

Augusto Marietti, CEO of the API company Kong, said top-tier models have grown so expensive that open-weight usage has surged over the past three months.

Rafi Krikorian, CTO of Mozilla, compared using a top-tier model for everyday work to driving a Ferrari to the grocery store.

He added that costs for routine work can drop by as much as a factor of 50.

Is a three-point score gap worth paying tens of times more? The market has answered.

What changes as free models pile up

AI prices may come down.

One AI investor cited by Axios expects open models to handle 95% of enterprise AI requests, leaving only 5% to the top tier.

Morgan Stanley said the results show Chinese large language models catching up with leading US firms in scale, performance and price.

My read: the quieter change comes first — the engine behind the services you already use. If you run a chatbot, you now have an option that costs a fraction as much.

The top score still hasn't changed hands, though. That part is worth watching.
