구글은 제미나이에 공부용 기능을 따로 두고 사용법을 도움말에 적어 두었습니다. 가이드 학습과 시각 자료, 교육 리소스로 제미나이를 개인 교사처럼 쓰라는 것입니다.

■ 연습 문제와 유튜브

배운 걸 확인하는 데는 연습 문제가 있습니다. 해설과 힌트가 붙은 연습 문제를 달라고 하면 되고, 객관식이나 서술형처럼 문제 유형을 정할 수도 있습니다. 퀴즈와 플래시카드를 만드는 안내도 따로 마련돼 있습니다.

유튜브 동영상도 씁니다. 제미나이는 개념을 설명하려고 답에 유튜브 동영상을 넣기도 하고, 동영상을 보여 달라고 하거나 유튜브 링크를 넣고 그 영상을 바탕으로 답하거나 학습 자료를 만들어 달라고 할 수도 있습니다.

여기엔 조건이 하나 있습니다. 유튜브 동영상이 들어간 답은 'Gemini 앱 활동'이 켜져 있을 때만 나온다고 구글은 적었습니다. 활동 기록을 꺼 두었다면 영상이 붙지 않습니다.

■ 한국에서 못 쓰는 것

그럼 모든 기능을 한국에서도 쓸 수 있을까요? 하나는 분명히 막혀 있습니다.

구글은 프롬프트에 '@OpenStax'라고 쓰면 오픈스택스 교과서 같은 신뢰할 만한 교육 자료를 바탕으로 답하게 할 수 있다고 소개합니다. 하지만 이 기능은 현재 미국에서 영어로만 쓸 수 있고, 당분간 만 18세 미만이나 직장·학교 계정으로 로그인한 사용자에게는 제공되지 않는다고 적혀 있습니다.

그래서 국내 학생이 교과서 기반 답을 원한다면, 공부하는 교재나 자료를 직접 올리고 그걸 바탕으로 설명해 달라고 하는 편이 현실적입니다. 파일 올리기는 가이드 학습에서도 됩니다.

■ 구글이 직접 적은 주의

구글은 생성형 AI로 공부하는 법을 다룬 도움말을 따로 두었는데, 첫 줄이 학교 정책입니다. 생성형 AI 사용에 대한 학교 정책을 확인하고 지켜야 한다는 것입니다.

쓰는 법의 예는 구체적입니다. 삼각비를 이해할 수 있게 랩을 써 달라고 하거나, 수학 문제 풀이의 상세한 단계를 알려 달라고 하거나, 시험 대비가 충분하다고 느낄 만큼 연습 문제를 내 달라고 하라는 것입니다. 토론 수업을 앞두고는 상대측 주장을 요청해 다른 관점을 이해할 수 있다고 했습니다.

그리고 두 가지를 강조합니다. 하나는 답을 항상 검토하라는 것입니다. 생성형 AI는 강력하지만 실수할 수 있으니 자료나 구글 검색으로 사실을 확인하라고 적었습니다. 다른 하나는 창작자는 자신이라는 점입니다. AI의 추천은 시작을 위한 참고로 삼고, 자신의 목소리와 아이디어로 독창적인 결과물을 만들라는 것입니다.

■ 정리하면

Have you tried studying with AI? On Naver's Q&A service, a search for 'ChatGPT study' returns 4,223 questions as of September 24.

Google has built study features into Gemini and documented them in its help center: guided learning, visuals and educational resources to use Gemini like a personal tutor.

But part of it is not available to users in Korea, and Google adds its own cautions. This piece covers the features along with both.

■ Turning on guided learning

From the tools menu under the text box, select Guided Learning and type a question about what you want to learn. You can upload the files or images you are studying too.

It is rolling out gradually on the mobile app; Google says if you do not see it, try again later or go to the web at gemini.google.com.

Pictures come along: Gemini may include images to explain a concept, and you can ask it for diagrams or images directly.

■ Practice problems and YouTube

To check what you learned, ask for practice problems with explanations and hints, and specify the type - multiple choice or written answers. There is separate guidance on making quizzes and flashcards.

YouTube is used too. Gemini may include YouTube videos to explain a concept, and you can ask it to show videos, or paste a YouTube link and ask it to answer or build study material from that video.

There is one condition: Google says answers that include YouTube videos appear only when Gemini Apps Activity is on. If you have turned activity off, no videos are attached.

■ What is not available in Korea

So can you use all of it here? One feature is clearly unavailable.

Google says typing '@OpenStax' in a prompt grounds answers in trusted educational sources such as OpenStax textbooks. But this is currently available only in the US in English, and for now is not offered to users under 18 or signed in with work or school accounts.

So students here who want textbook-based answers are better off uploading their own course materials and asking for explanations based on them - uploading works in guided learning as well.

■ Google's own cautions

Google has a separate help page on learning with generative AI, and its first point is school policy: check and follow your school's policy on generative AI use.

Its examples are concrete: ask for a rap that helps you understand trigonometric ratios, request step-by-step solutions to math problems, or ask for enough practice questions to feel ready for a test. Before a debate class, ask for the opposing side's arguments to understand other perspectives.

It stresses two things. Always review the answers - generative AI is powerful but can make mistakes, so fact-check with your own sources or Google Search. And remember you are the creator: treat AI suggestions as a starting point and make something original in your own voice.
