■ 먼저 확인할 조건

누구나 만들 수 있을까요? 조건이 셋 붙어 있습니다.

개인 구글 계정으로 로그인해야 하고, EEA와 스위스, 영국에서는 현재 쓸 수 없습니다. 그리고 아바타는 현재 영어로만 지원된다고 적혀 있습니다. 한국어 사용자라면 이 부분부터 확인해야 합니다.

아바타로 동영상까지 만들려면 구글 AI 요금제가 있어야 합니다.

■ 등록하는 법

컴퓨터에서 입력창 하단의 파일 추가 메뉴에서 '아바타'를 누르면 QR 코드가 뜹니다. 휴대전화나 태블릿으로 찍은 뒤 화면 안내에 따라 얼굴을 등록하고 목소리를 녹음합니다. 카메라와 마이크 권한을 허용해야 하고, 마치면 컴퓨터로 돌아와 절차를 끝냅니다.

녹화가 통과되려면 요령이 있습니다. 휴대전화는 눈높이로 들고, 너무 밝거나 어둡지 않은 조명에서 찍습니다. 선글라스나 마스크, 모자 없이 눈·코·입이 모두 보여야 하는데 안경은 괜찮습니다. 목소리는 다른 사람 목소리가 없는 조용한 곳에서, 배경에는 사람이나 얼굴 이미지가 없어야 합니다.

■ 쓰는 법

요청에 '@'를 치고 메뉴에서 내 구글 사용자 이름을 고르면 아바타가 들어갑니다. 구글의 예는 "@[내 구글 사용자 이름]이 오케스트라와 함께 노래하는 이미지를 만들어 줘", "@[내 구글 사용자 이름]이 주인공으로 등장해 용과 맞서는 이야기를 써 줘" 같은 문장입니다.

■ 지워도 남는 것

마음이 바뀌면 어떻게 지울까요?

설정의 '개인 아바타'에서 '삭제'를 누르면 구글 계정의 얼굴 인증 동영상 페이지로 넘어가고, 거기서 셀피와 음성 녹화 파일을 지웁니다. 다시 찍고 싶을 때는 같은 메뉴의 '다시 찍기'를 씁니다.

지우면 두 가지가 일어납니다. 그 아바타로는 새 AI 콘텐츠를 만들 수 없게 되고, 녹화했던 셀피와 음성 데이터가 구글 시스템에서 삭제됩니다.

하지만 하나는 남습니다. 그 아바타로 이미 만들고 게시한 동영상이나 콘텐츠는 삭제되지 않는다고 구글은 적었습니다. 내 얼굴이 들어간 결과물을 어디에 올렸는지는 스스로 챙겨야 한다는 뜻입니다.

Gemini's avatar feature lets you record your face and voice once and appear in images made with Nano Banana or videos made with Gemini Omni. It is English only for now, and deleting the avatar does not delete content already published with it. Here are the conditions to check before registering, and what remains after deletion, according to Google's help center.

■ Conditions to check first

Can anyone make one? Three conditions apply.

You must sign in with a personal Google account, and it is currently unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. And avatars are currently supported in English only - Korean-speaking users should check that first.

Making videos with your avatar requires a Google AI plan.

■ How to register

On a computer, choose Avatar from the add-file menu below the text box, and a QR code appears. Scan it with a phone or tablet, follow the on-screen steps to register your face and record your voice, allow camera and microphone access, then finish on the computer.

To get the recording approved: hold the phone at eye level, use lighting that is neither too bright nor too dark, keep eyes, nose and mouth visible without sunglasses, masks or hats (glasses are fine), record your voice somewhere quiet with no other voices, and keep people and face images out of the background.

The account owner must complete this personally; Google says not to let minors record themselves.

■ How to use it

Type '@' in a prompt and pick your Google username from the menu to include your avatar. Google's examples: "Create an image of @[my username] singing with an orchestra" and "Write a story with @[my username] as the hero facing a dragon."

■ What remains after deletion

What if you change your mind?

In Settings > Personal avatar, click Delete to go to your Google Account's face verification video page, and delete the selfie and voice recordings there. To redo it, use Retake in the same menu.

Deleting does two things: that avatar can no longer create new AI content, and the recorded selfie and voice data are deleted from Google's systems.

But one thing stays: videos or content already created and published with that avatar are not deleted, Google says. Keeping track of where content with your face was posted is up to you.
