Gemini has a personal AI agent called Gemini Spark. Google says it automates complex workflows and manages schedules for ongoing tasks: give it a goal and a deadline, and it works using sources such as connected apps, websites you are signed in to and your location. Deleting a task leaves behind files Spark created or modified and remote browser data. Worth knowing, along with the conditions, before you hand anything over.

On Naver's Q&A service, a search for 'AI agent' returns 2,812 questions as of September 24.

■ Conditions

You must be 18 or older and signed in with a personal Google account; work or school accounts cannot use it. You also need a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription and Keep Activity on. Google's pricing page lists Spark among advanced features Ultra gets to try first, so check it works on your plan before subscribing.

Region matters too: it is available in Gemini-supported countries except the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland and the UK, and only in the mobile app, the Mac app and the web app (gemini.google.com).

■ What to hand over

Google's examples: cleaning up your inbox by summarizing or archiving newsletters and unsubscribing, personalized news summaries with follow-up stories, and deep dives on a topic with sources cited.

It can also take on web tasks: with Chrome auto browse you can ask for shopping, travel bookings or dinner reservations. Currently only Spark in desktop Chrome can auto browse.

■ Your browser or a remote one

Which browser does Spark use? There are two ways, and what gets shared differs.

With your local Chrome, Spark can reach the same sites you can, including ones you are signed in to. Acting for you, it shares needed information with third parties - possibly your name, contact details, files, preferences and information you consider sensitive - and, with your permission, can use logins saved in your password manager for loyalty memberships and online accounts. Your device and Chrome must stay awake; if you close or turn off the device, Spark may finish in a remote browser.

A remote browser is a separate, new browser instance in the cloud. Tasks can continue with your device closed, but steps such as a site asking you to sign in pause until you take over.

The first time it needs to browse, Chrome asks permission to connect to Spark; after that, Spark asks for confirmation before every task that needs browsing. You can turn auto browse off in Chrome settings.

■ How to stop

Clicking stop in the Gemini side panel in Chrome stops browsing - but Google says Gemini then tries to find next steps to continue, which may include using a remote browser or other tools. To cancel the task entirely, click Stop in the Spark text box.

■ What remains after deletion

Track tasks on the Spark tasks page in the sidebar, where you can pin, rename or delete threads.

Deleting a task thread deletes the task, related Gemini Apps activity and linked schedules - but not files created or modified, such as Google Workspace files, or remote browser or remote code execution data linked to the task. Delete remote data separately in Spark settings.

Be careful with sensitive work: Google warns not to type login or payment details into the task thread and not to schedule sensitive tasks.

■ In short

  • 18+, personal account, AI Pro or Ultra, Keep Activity on
  • Not in the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK; mobile, Mac app and web only
  • Local Chrome reaches your signed-in sites and shares needed info with third parties
  • A remote browser keeps going with your device closed but pauses at sign-ins
  • To stop completely, click Stop in the Spark text box
  • Deleting a task leaves created files and remote data - delete them in settings
