AI한테 회사 자료를 붙여넣은 적이 있다.
찜찜해서 대화를 지웠다. 그러면 없어진 걸까.
공식 문서를 뒤져보니 서비스마다 답이 달랐다. 한 곳은 30일, 한 곳은 3년이다..
클로드 — 지우면 30일 안에 사라진다
앤트로픽 프라이버시 센터에 적힌 내용이다. 대화를 삭제하면 이력에서는 즉시 사라지고, 백엔드 저장소에서는 30일 안에 지워진다.
중요한 건 이 문장이다. 삭제한 대화는 앞으로 모델 학습에 쓰이지 않는다.
다만 조건이 붙는다. 학습 허용을 켜둔 상태였다면, 그 전에 들어간 데이터는 비식별 형태로 최대 5년까지 남는다.
이용정책을 위반한 것으로 판단된 대화는 별도다. 입력과 출력이 최대 2년, 안전 점수는 최대 7년 보관된다. 내가 남긴 피드백은 5년이다.
학습 허용을 끄는 설정 이름은 'Model Improvement'이고 'Privacy Settings' 안에 있다.
그리고 이 규정은 무료·프로·맥스 같은 개인용에만 적용된다. Claude for Work 나 API 는 정책이 따로 있다.
제미나이 — 지워도 3년 남는 경우가 있다
이쪽이 더 놀라웠다.
구글 제미나이 앱 도움말에 이렇게 적혀 있다. 사람 검토자가 검토한 대화는 내가 활동을 삭제해도 지워지지 않고, 최대 3년간 보관된다.
함께 남는 것도 명시돼 있다. 사용 언어, 기기 종류, 위치 정보, 내가 남긴 피드백이다.
기본 보관 기간은 18개월이고, 설정에서 3개월·36개월·무기한으로 바꿀 수 있다. 설정 이름은 'Keep Activity'이고 위치는 마이 액티비티의 제미나이 앱 활동 페이지다.
구글은 도움말에 대놓고 이렇게 써뒀다. 검토자가 보면 안 될 기밀 정보는 넣지 말라는 것.
즉 '삭제'가 모든 사본을 지우는 버튼이 아니다. 이미 사람 손을 거친 건 그 버튼이 닿지 않는다.
챗GPT를 이 글에서 빼는 이유
오픈AI 공식 문서는 확인하지 못했다.
도움말 센터와 프라이버시 정책 페이지 다섯 곳을 시도했는데 전부 자동 접근을 차단한다.
요약 기사들은 있지만, 보관 기간처럼 정확해야 하는 숫자를 2차 자료로 옮겨 쓰고 싶지 않았다.
챗GPT를 쓰신다면 설정 화면에서 직접 확인하시는 게 맞다. 여기서 숫자를 지어내는 것보다 낫다.
정리하면 이렇게 갈린다
- 클로드 — 삭제하면 30일 내 소멸, 학습에도 안 쓰임
- 클로드(학습 허용 상태였다면) — 비식별 형태로 최대 5년
- 클로드(정책 위반 판단) — 입출력 2년, 안전 점수 7년
- 제미나이 — 기본 18개월, 3·36개월·무기한 선택 가능
- 제미나이(사람이 검토한 대화) — 삭제해도 최대 3년
숫자만 보면 클로드가 짧고 제미나이가 길다. 다만 조건이 다르니 단순 비교는 조심스럽다.
그래서 실제로 뭘 하면 되나
설정을 바꾸는 것보다 먼저 할 일이 있다.
① 민감한 건 애초에 넣지 않는다. 지우는 방법을 아는 것보다 이게 확실하다. 두 회사 문서 모두 같은 얘기를 한다.
② 학습 허용을 끈다. 클로드는 'Model Improvement', 제미나이는 'Keep Activity'다.
③ 보관 기간을 줄인다. 제미나이는 3개월까지 내릴 수 있다.
④ 회사 자료라면 개인용 요금제로 넣지 않는다. 업무용·API 는 정책이 별도라, 개인 계정에 넣는 순간 개인용 규정을 따른다.
'삭제'는 내 화면에서 지우는 버튼이고, 모든 사본을 지우는 버튼은 아니다.
이 글의 숫자는 2026년 7월 30일에 공식 문서에서 확인한 값이다.
이런 조항은 조용히 바뀐다. 중요한 자료를 다룰 일이 있으면 그때 다시 보는 게 맞다.

I went through the official docs, and the answer differs by service. One says 30 days. One says three years..
Claude — gone within 30 days
This is from Anthropic's Privacy Center. Delete a conversation and it disappears from your history immediately, and from back-end storage within 30 days.
One sentence matters most: deleted chats will not be used to train future models.
There's a condition, though. If training use was switched on, data that went in before that stays for up to five years in de-identified form.
Conversations judged to violate the usage policy are separate: inputs and outputs for up to two years, safety scores for up to seven. Feedback you submit is kept five years.
The setting that turns training use off is called "Model Improvement", inside "Privacy Settings".
And these rules cover the consumer plans — Free, Pro, Max. Claude for Work and the API have separate policies.
Gemini — some of it stays three years
This side surprised me more.
Google's Gemini Apps help says chats reviewed by human reviewers are not deleted when you delete your activity, and are retained for up to three years.
What stays alongside is spelled out too: your language, device type, location info and any feedback you gave.
Default retention is 18 months, changeable to 3 months, 36 months or indefinite. The setting is "Keep Activity", found on the Gemini Apps Activity page in My Activity.
Google states it plainly in the help page: don't enter confidential information you wouldn't want a reviewer to see.
So "delete" isn't a button that erases every copy. Anything already through human hands is out of its reach.
Why ChatGPT isn't in this piece
I couldn't verify OpenAI's official documentation.
I tried five pages across the help centre and privacy policy, and all of them block automated access.
Summaries exist elsewhere, but I didn't want to copy numbers like retention periods out of secondary sources when they need to be exact.
If you use ChatGPT, check it in your own settings. That beats inventing a number here.
How it breaks down
- Claude — deleted, gone within 30 days, not used for training
- Claude (if training was on) — up to 5 years, de-identified
- Claude (policy violations) — 2 years for inputs/outputs, 7 for safety scores
- Gemini — 18 months by default; 3, 36 months or indefinite
- Gemini (human-reviewed chats) — up to 3 years, even after deletion
On the numbers alone Claude is shorter and Gemini longer. The conditions differ, though, so a flat comparison is a stretch.
What to actually do
There's something to do before changing any setting.
① Don't put sensitive material in to begin with. That's more reliable than knowing how to delete it. Both companies' docs say the same thing.
② Turn training use off — "Model Improvement" on Claude, "Keep Activity" on Gemini.
③ Shorten retention. Gemini goes down to three months.
④ Don't put company material through a personal plan. Work and API tiers have separate policies; a personal account follows the consumer rules.
"Delete" clears it from your screen. It isn't a button that erases every copy.
