The AI summary at the top of Google results is AI Overviews; the search you continue like a conversation is AI Mode. Both work in Korea, in Korean.

AI Overviews cannot be turned off. Instead, choose the 'Web' filter after searching to see only links, without the overview.

On Naver's Q&A service, a search for 'AI Overviews' (in Korean) returns 2,532 questions as of October 6, and 'Google AI Mode' returns 1,542.

AI Overviews: the summary above results

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that bundle key information with links to explore further.

They don't appear for every search: they show only when Google's systems judge generative AI especially useful, such as when you want to grasp information from many sources quickly. That is why some searches show no overview.

They can also appear when you search with an image or use Circle to Search.

Google says more than 1.5 billion people use AI Overviews every month.

AI Mode: keep asking in a conversation

AI Mode extends what AI Overviews do. It splits your question into subtopics, searches them at the same time and combines the results into one answer, a technique Google calls 'query fan-out.'

Google brought AI Mode to Korea last September. No Search Labs sign-up is needed, and Korean was among the first local languages AI Mode supported.

There are three ways in: go to google.com/ai, type a question in the google.com search box and tap 'AI Mode,' or tap 'AI Mode' on the Google app home screen.

You can ask with text, voice, images or files such as PDFs, and you can paste a web page address to ask about that page.

On mobile, tap the option to see more at the bottom of an AI Overview and type a follow-up to move into AI Mode. The context of your original search carries over, so you don't have to start again.

If you'd rather not see AI Overviews

Google says AI Overviews, like knowledge panels, are a core part of Search and cannot be turned off. Choosing the 'Web' filter after a search shows only text-based links, without features like AI Overviews.

There is also a setting to turn off 'AI in Search' in Search Labs, but it opts you out of trying new experiments early; it does not remove AI Overviews.

Don't take the answers on faith, either. Google says AI Overviews can and do make mistakes, and advises checking important information in more than one place by clicking the source links.

If you see a wrong answer, tap the thumbs-down icon under the overview to report the problem.

Use AI Overviews to skim quickly, AI Mode for questions with many conditions, and the 'Web' filter when you don't need an AI answer at all.
