Plenty of people ask AI to summarize long articles, videos or documents. On Naver's Q&A service, a search for 'ChatGPT summary' returns 2,328 questions and 'YouTube summary AI' 1,299, as of September 24.

Every AI can summarize; the difference is what you hand over. A web address, an uploaded file or a YouTube link each use different features with different conditions. File size and count limits were covered in our September 9 piece, so this one focuses on how to get summaries.

One thing first: a summary shortens the original, so context can drop out. Anthropic and Google both say so explicitly.

■ Web pages - give the address, or summarize in the browser

How do you summarize an article or blog post?

With web search turned on, Claude takes a URL and retrieves the page itself. Anthropic calls this web fetch, and says it lets Claude access and analyze the full content of articles, blog posts and other web pages.

Free users get a caution: when you give a direct link to a long article and ask for a summary, the whole article enters the context window and can use a significant share of your usage limit. Anthropic's example is a 10,000-word article, which uses substantially more than a regular search. So it advises deciding first whether you need the full analysis or just key points.

Gemini is built into Chrome: with the page open, click Gemini in Chrome at the top of the browser and ask. You can also drag and drop or copy-paste images from the page.

■ Files - documents, sheets, audio, video

Google says you can upload documents, spreadsheets, notebooks, photos, videos and more to Gemini to get answers, summaries and statistics about the content - up to 10 files at once, so several documents can be summarized together.

Adding files directly from Google Drive has conditions: Keep Activity must be on and Google Workspace connected to Gemini. On work or school accounts, an administrator must enable app access.

For audio and video, length is what matters. Without Google AI Pro or Ultra you can upload up to 5 minutes of video and 10 minutes of audio in total; Pro or Ultra raise that to 1 hour of video and 3 hours of audio. Check that line before summarizing a long meeting recording.

■ YouTube - paste the link

YouTube videos go in as links. Google's help says you can include a YouTube link in a prompt and ask Gemini to answer or build study material from that video.

But answers that include YouTube videos are provided only when Gemini Apps Activity is on - with activity off, this route may be blocked.

■ Why a summary is not enough

Summaries are convenient but do not replace the original, and both companies warn in the same spirit.

Anthropic advises checking cited sources for search-based answers, because original websites may contain important context or details not included in Claude's synthesis. Google likewise says generative AI can make mistakes, so always review answers and fact-check.

So for summaries that feed important decisions, it is safer to re-check numbers, dates and quotes against the original. Use the summary to decide what to read.

■ In short

  • For web articles, give Claude the URL - web search must be on for it to read the page
  • On free Claude, long-article links use a lot of your limit - decide if key points are enough
  • In Gemini, use Gemini in Chrome to summarize the page you are viewing
  • Upload up to 10 documents, sheets or videos at once - Drive needs activity and Workspace connection
  • Without Pro or Ultra: 10 minutes of audio, 5 minutes of video
  • For YouTube, paste the link - Gemini Apps Activity must be on
  • Re-check numbers, dates and quotes in the original
