구글 번역은 글자만 옮기는 게 아니라 문서 파일, 웹사이트, 사진 속 글자, 말소리까지 번역합니다. 문서 번역은 10MB 이하 파일, PDF는 300페이지 이하까지입니다. 로그인한 상태라면 번역 기록이 클라우드에 자동으로 저장된다는 점도 알고 쓰는 게 좋습니다. 기능마다 한도와 조건이 달라, 구글 번역 고객센터 문서를 기능별로 모아 정리했습니다.
네이버 지식iN에서 'AI 번역'으로 검색되는 질문이 9월 24일 기준 3만6천 건이 넘고, '챗GPT 번역'도 2,709건입니다.
■ 문서 통째로 — 10MB, PDF 300페이지
브라우저에서 구글 번역에 들어가 위쪽의 '문서'를 누르고, 도착어와 출발어를 고른 뒤 '컴퓨터에서 찾아보기'로 파일을 올립니다. 그다음 '번역 보기'나 '번역 다운로드'를 누르면 됩니다.
올릴 수 있는 건 크기가 10MB 이하인 .docx, .pdf, .pptx, .xlsx 문서입니다. PDF는 300페이지 이하여야 하고, 더 크거나 많은 문서는 Cloud Translation API를 쓰라고 안내합니다.
휴대전화로는 안 됩니다. 현재 화면이 작은 기기나 휴대기기에서는 문서 번역이 지원되지 않고, 일부 지역에서도 지원되지 않는다고 적혀 있습니다.
웹사이트는 '웹사이트'에 주소를 넣고 '이동'을 누르면 됩니다. 원문 언어는 '언어 감지'로 두는 게 좋다고 구글은 권하고, 번역된 페이지에서 원본과 번역본을 오갈 수 있습니다.
■ 사진 속 글자 — 선명할수록 정확하다
컴퓨터에서는 '이미지' 탭을 고르고 '컴퓨터에서 찾아보기'로 사진을 올립니다. 번역이 끝나면 '텍스트 복사'로 글자만 가져오거나 '번역 다운로드'로 번역된 이미지를 받을 수 있고, '원본 텍스트 보기'를 켜면 원문과 나란히 봅니다.
휴대전화에서는 번역 앱의 카메라로 간판이나 손으로 쓴 메모를 비춰 번역할 수 있습니다.
정확도는 사진에 달렸습니다. 구글은 번역의 정확성이 텍스트의 선명도에 따라 다르며, 작거나 불분명하거나 스타일이 지정된 글자는 정확도가 떨어질 수 있다고 적었습니다. 흔히 쓰는 글꼴이 담긴 선명한 이미지를 올리라는 게 구글의 요령입니다.
■ 말로, 대화로 — 실시간 번역
컴퓨터에서는 마이크를 눌러 말하면 번역됩니다. 다만 음성 입력이 완전히 지원되는 브라우저는 크롬뿐이고, 마이크로 번역할 때는 언어가 자동으로 감지되지 않아 출발어를 직접 골라야 합니다. 웹에서는 말하는 동시에 번역하는 기능은 쓸 수 없습니다.
실시간 통역은 휴대전화나 태블릿의 번역 앱에서 합니다. 하단의 '실시간 번역'을 누르고 모드를 고르는데, 헤드폰이나 수화기로 듣는 '듣기', 번역이 소리로 나와 번갈아 말하는 '대화', 소리 없이 읽는 '텍스트만'이 있습니다. 안드로이드 도움말의 지원 언어 목록에는 한국어가 들어 있습니다.
마주 앉아 대화할 때는 '대면 모드'가 있습니다. 화면이 반으로 나뉘어 각자 자기 언어로 된 스크립트와 번역을 봅니다. 앱을 전환하거나 화면이 잠겨도 번역 세션은 계속됩니다.
■ 인터넷이 없을 때
언어를 미리 내려받으면 인터넷 없이도 번역할 수 있습니다. 번역 앱에서 언어 옆의 다운로드를 누르면 되고, Wi-Fi 없이 모바일 데이터로 받으면 이동통신사 요금이 청구될 수 있다고 적혀 있습니다.
다만 실시간 번역을 오프라인으로 쓰는 기능은 현재 픽셀 9, 10, 11 사용자만 이용할 수 있습니다.
■ 번역 기록은 어디에 남나
민감한 문서를 번역했다면 그 기록은 어디에 남을까요?
번역 앱은 기기의 기록을 클라우드로 동기화하고, 로그인하면 번역이 클라우드에 자동으로 저장됩니다. 저장된 기록은 '내 활동'에서 관리합니다. 앱에서 클라우드 기록을 쓰지 않으려면 계정에서 로그아웃해야 한다고 구글은 적었습니다.
지우는 방법도 있습니다. 컴퓨터의 구글 번역 하단에서 '기록'을 누른 뒤 '기록 지우기'로 전부 지우거나, 항목 옆 메뉴에서 '기록에서 삭제'로 하나씩 지웁니다.

Google Translate handles not only typed text but document files, websites, text in photos and speech. Document translation takes files up to 10 MB, and PDFs up to 300 pages. If you are signed in, your translation history is saved to the cloud automatically. Limits and conditions differ by feature, so here they are, gathered from the Google Translate Help Center.
On Naver's Q&A service, a search for 'AI translation' returns more than 36,000 questions as of September 24, and 'ChatGPT translation' 2,709.
■ Whole documents - 10 MB, 300 PDF pages
In a browser, open Google Translate, click Documents at the top, choose the languages, and click Browse your computer to upload. Then view or download the translation.
Supported files are .docx, .pdf, .pptx and .xlsx up to 10 MB; PDFs must be 300 pages or fewer. For more or larger documents, Google points to the Cloud Translation API.
Not on phones: document translation isn't available on smaller screens or mobile, and is not supported in some regions.
For websites, click Websites, enter the URL and go. Google recommends setting the source language to Detect language, and you can switch between the original and translated pages.
■ Text in photos - sharper is better
On a computer, select the Images tab and click Browse your computer. Once translated, Copy text takes the text, Download translation saves the translated image, and Show original puts the original side by side.
On a phone, the Translate app's camera can translate signs or handwritten notes.
Accuracy depends on the photo: Google says it varies with the clarity of the text, and small, unclear or stylized text may translate less accurately. Its advice is to upload a clear image with a common font.
■ Speech and conversation - live translate
On a computer, click the mic and speak. Only Chrome fully supports voice input, and the language is not detected automatically when you use the mic, so pick the source language yourself. Translate on the web cannot translate while you speak.
Live interpretation happens in the Translate app on a phone or tablet: tap live translate and choose a mode - Listening through headphones or the earpiece, Conversation with translations played aloud as you take turns, or Text only. Korean is on the Android help page's list of supported languages.
Face to face mode splits the screen so each speaker sees the transcription and translation in their own language. The session continues even if you switch apps or the screen locks.
■ Without internet
Download languages in advance to translate offline: tap download next to a language in the Translate app. Downloading over mobile data instead of Wi-Fi may incur carrier charges.
Offline live translate, however, is currently available only to Pixel 9, 10 and 11 users.
■ Where your history is kept
If you translate sensitive documents, where does the record stay?
The Translate app syncs history to the cloud, and when you are signed in, translations are saved there automatically; manage it in My Activity. To not use cloud history in the app, you must sign out, Google says.
To delete, click History at the bottom of Google Translate on a computer, then Clear history for everything, or Remove from history for a single entry.
